How Do I Manage General Permission Numbers?

January 17, 2023

Introduction

Academic Calendar Timeline

Before the fifth day of classes, students may need to obtain permission for certain types of classes, including but not limited to independent study, directed study thesis, internships, etc.

Also, as per SDSU’s revised wait list policy, after the sixth day of classes, students will need permission from the faculty or department to enroll in a course.

If the course requires instructor consent, students will need to obtain permission to enroll in the class. The permission type is determined at the section level:

General permission numbers, where a permission code is generated and the unique permission code is given to students individually. Students will then enter this code in my.SDSU when enrolling in the course.

Note: class permissions override conditions such as requisites and limits. These permissions allow students to add or drop a course as long as the permissions have not expired.

Permission Number Type Usage Responsible for Enrolling with Permission?

Note: If the class has not been enabled for student specific permission numbers, you may only issue general permission numbers.

If the class was set up with general permission numbers, then the Permission page will only allow you to generate permission codes. The student will use that permission code to enroll in the class.

  3. Select the course you wish to create permission numbers for.

  4. Then, you will be redirected to a page that contains two tabs: Permission to Add and Permission to Drop.

Note: Please be sure you are working within the Permission to Add tab.

  5. If the class was set up with general permission numbers, then the Permission page will only allow you to generate permission codes. The student will use that permission code to enroll in the class.

Within the Permission to Add page, you will generate permission codes or add specific students to a list. This will depend on how you set up the class at the section level.
